Modifying a generic steel bracelet for Seiko 0922-8000

The 1970s is a funny time.

After the first Seiko quartz has been introduced, for a couple of years quartz watches were branded as luxurious and superior alternatives to traditional mechanical watches.

This means quartz like this Seiko 0922-8000 would use the same case as a premium mechanical King Seiko with slightly difference in dial and hands design.

An affordable King Seiko look-alike.

Not very inspiring look though, maybe I will take another photo later.

This watch works well with a think black leather strap, but would have looked nice with steel bracelet too.

Not because I have many watches with similar look.

I was actually inspired by a Japanese blog which did this.

From Taobao a generic steel bracelet can be bought cheaply.

When first fitting the curved end of the bracelet on 0922-8000, a few issues surfaced.

  1. middle is too flat
  2. sides not sharp enough
  3. the sides are maybe 0.1mm too wide
  4. lugs at the bottom are too tight
  5. curved not slanted enough to fit the watch lug

I tried resolving (1) and (2) by hand sanding with a strip of 60 grit sand paper. No dice.

Instead a sandpaper mounted on dremel worked way more, despite also leaving some marks that I need to polish later.

By repeatedly slightly sanding down the curved end and test fit, I was able to get it to reasonably fit.

Likewise for issue (3).

Issue (4) can be resolved by bending the curved end lugs until it fits snugly onto the watch.

I can't really do much about issue (5) except by finding different strap.

I am anyway happy to have found a process to do this.

Edit (2024-11-14): The same strap happened to work even better on a 3302-8000.
