But today's theme isn't really about another Seiko watch. It's about shucking and chucking some MoonSwatches into a slightly more presentable metal case from the plastic case they were trapped in.

One day when randomly scrolling through the dreadful Japanese watches showoff and validation-seeking first builds, I saw the term "Moonswitches" which I thought was misspelt "MoonSwatches".

Oh no, these people are bonkers — willing to dremel their way through the Swatch group's denial of right to repair to free the watch dial and movement assembly, and then chuck them into a made in China steel speedy case.

…ain't that fun to try once?

I think it's on the Swatch group to create these cheap n' plastic-looking quartz watches, only to let Chinese reps be made super easily and cheaply with a Sunon PE50 movement and actual plastic watch cases.

I think it's on Seiko, Miyota and Sunon to have created quartz movements with compatible stem heights and movement sizes, allowing for simply chucking of the PE50 reps into either a VK63 or OS20 or PE90 case.

Only incompatibility is maybe the dial size which can only go down not up.

Look, on a PE90 or PE60 watch, which most of these cheap Chinese watches use, the distance from the center of the dial to the center of any of the subdials is 7.5mm. Count the pixels. If you can't, go back to secondary school and try to actually pass Mathematics this time.

I would argue the benefit of getting cheap Chinese quartz chronographs as the case donor over getting the Chinese Speedy/Daytona case reps are:

• You can re-use the dial later if you're bored
• You can use the watch if case doesn't fit
• You can use the PE50/PE60/PE70/PE90 movement holder inside
• You know stem height would fit
• Cheap

And then there's an optional mod to increase the fidelity with PE50 movement. Simply gut it of its date changing mechanism and stick the 24-hour wheel on its post so the supposedly 1/10s hand on the 2 o'clock subdial doesn't move.

And I don't know what else to say. This whole time I have been scrolling through the Reddit community which is terribly repetitive with very similar builds but weirdly nice people. With my builds I tried not to replicate what's been done hundreds of times but I am not fooling myself by saying I am the only person PPAP'ing these Moonswitches the way I did.

I guess ultimately the fun starts, and any guilt of switching stops, when one stops trying to replicate a particular watch and freely roams the realm of possibilities — what if the speedy dial is on this case, and what kind of measures, a telemeter, tachymeter, or pulsometer, do I like?

Some day, when you actually try switching, I hope you can have some fun. Swatch can't deny you this fun, but you yourself can by taking any of these too seriously.
